DJ George English

I’m a vinyl DJ and film photographer based in Telford, Shropshire. I put on discos like the ones you remember when you were younger.

The Music

I was collecting records long before I started DJing. I have a huge collection of party tunes spanning the 70s-00s:

  • 70s Disco, Classic Rock
  • 80s Pop, Hip Hop
  • 90s House, Cheese, RnB, Rap
  • 00s Club Classics, Dance Anthems, Trance, RnB, Indie
  • A few hidden gems for variety / the odd newer one

My vibe could be described as a mix of “old pub jukebox” and “2003 nightclub”. I don’t play much 60s, Motown or Reggae but I bring some just in case — I want everyone to have their moment on the dancefloor regardless of age, and if there’s a few arms round shoulders singing along at the end, all the better.

Why Vinyl?

Why choose a vinyl DJ for your wedding?

If you think about it, weddings are one of the few occasions where people deliberately reject the modern, more efficient option in favour of something with history, craftsmanship, and symbolism:

  • Handwritten invitations/place cards
  • A classic car, or horse and carriage
  • A stately manor house, castle or barn

That’s where vinyl fits perfectly. It’s not the most efficient way to play music. It is old fashioned. But it also has a timeless aesthetic that people can appreciate and experience. Modern DJ decks are covered in buttons, screens and flashing lights. They can look more like the controls of a spaceship than something that belongs in a candlelit barn or Georgian manor house.

Like exposed beams, records have texture and history. They’re objects with presence. The crackle on the older ones has a charm to it.

The skills required to DJ with vinyl have an inherent showmanship. Guests watch me physically select a record, place the needle, and mix by hand. It’s part of the spectacle in the same way that watching a chef cook over fire is different from food arriving from a microwave.

Personally? I do it because it makes my job more fun. I don’t carry 10,000 songs on a hard drive — My record collection has been curated over years of DJing, with every track chosen for a reason.

Questions

What areas do you cover?

I’m based in Telford and cover Shrewsbury and Shropshire, and areas close to the Welsh border.

How much do you charge?

It depends on the size of the party and travel distance so please contact me, but as a rough guide:

  • Birthdays £200–300
  • Weddings £500+

Do you have lighting?

Yes, but my main focus is on the music. If you have the budget and want to put on a big show, I recommend the guys over at Rent My Event.

Do you take requests? Can you play _____?

Yes, often it’s a request that actually gets the dancefloor going - I will play it if I have it. I can source records if I have some notice.

How long will you play for? How late will you play to?

5 hours is about the limit if I’ve had food and alcohol. I don’t normally play past 1am but exceptions can be made 💰

Do you talk on the mic? Do you do karaoke?

Not really, but I do bring a mic for important announcements. You can use it but I’ll turn you down if you can’t sing 😂

You mentioned photography?

I bring my film camera to my gigs to capture old school, disposable camera style photos. A few examples are on this page. More examples are on my Instagram - @djgeorgeenglish

When’s your next gig?

I do a monthly set at The Loopy Shrew in Shrewsbury, and occasionally other bars/pubs. Check my Instagram bio for my upcoming dates - @djgeorgeenglish
